Data recovery at home?

Computer difficulties that start off as simple glitches can grow into big problems, and then worse, into irreversible damage. It is all too easy to reach this worst-case scenario by trying to fix the problem yourself with a program downloaded from the Internet that claims to "work miracles," or by enlisting the help of your neighbour's son who is claimed to be "a real computer wizard."

Of course, you could strike lucky, and the miracle solution really will cure your problem. The trouble is that in the case of certain problems where the storage media should not even be switched on, let alone tampered with. It takes an expert to diagnose the exact nature of the malfunction. There are some symptoms that immediately indicate the need to call in a proper (!) data recovery company. These include unusual, strange noises emanating from the hard drive unit, or a sound warning that the motor is not starting up properly.

There is another very good reason why it is safer to leave it to KÜRT. We always begin the recovery operation by making a backup copy of the defective media, and all the subsequent work is performed on that backup, so we can always revert to the original status. Unfortunately, in many cases we find obvious traces of previous unsuccessful recovery attempts, which may have ruined your chances of complete data recovery.
The reasons for data loss are manifold. An unfortunate set of circumstances and an unstable operating system could combine to scramble the file system on the hard drive, and the system will be unable to find the 'address' of the data you are searching for. Or the user may inadvertently activate a function that causes the data to disappear from the system (e. g. deleting the wrong file). Alternatively, the hard drive itself might fail, either as the result of an electronic failure, or microscopic damage to the surface of the magnetic media, causing the loss of data stored at that particular location. The read/write head that skims over the magnetic surface at a distance of a few tenths of a micron (one micron=0.001 millimetre) could brush against the surface and scratch it, or in the even of an office fire the metallic data storage discs might be warped by the heat of the burnt computers. The possibilities for disaster are endless.

From these case scenarios alone, you have probably realised that different problems require different treatments and different solutions. The complexity of any given data recovery assignment, the time and resources needed to complete it, and the cost, vary enormously.
